Cody Johnson Assimilate

The word assimilate means to take in another culture or to take in someones customs, and beliefs. In the play A Raisin in the Sun Beneatha really is worried about assimliate, because her attitude reflects one of a white rich women . She wants to be free woman, and wants to be able to make her own choices in life, not always asking for her sister or mother for any help. Early in the play she argues with Ruth about how she never asked anything from them and that they would treat her the same (free). I really think it is a weakness for her, because later on in the play she will probably get into a big mess and need her family to help her out. She wants to be a free women, but eventually every one needs help from there family even the rich snobby white girls who think they know everything.
I happen to see alot of people assimilate, especially in San Antonio. People from across the border who are new to our country really try hard to be like Americans. I live on a farm and we have many workers from Mexico that help us with are crops, and I can see them try to take in our culture by they stuff they do, and clothes they buy. Many people assimilate here, you do not really have to even lookn that far and you will see something doing it. It is happening all around us and we really do not even notice it.
I like to think i do not assimilate. I try to be myself and not get sucked into the culture of America. At times I probably do, and do not realize it, but in the long run I like to think I do not.Eric Liu's view on assimilation is that he is a victim to it. He describes it very well in his essay, by giving examples. He says that when he ate dinner at a friends house it was so much different then how his family ate dinner. Eventually he started to act and dress like a American and take in our culture. He seemed to really ashamed for fleeing his own culture, but blames it on his parents for not being strict on him.

  2. I agree but it happens all over the world not just san antonio specifically. But over all yes, you are right, assimilation is all over the place and changes people a lot.

  3. " I happen to see alot of people assimilate, especially in San Antonio." True many people do assimilate here. Can you give me any other examples that you have noticed?

  4. You are very right in the fact that people assimilate a lot in San Antonio and I think you are not getting sucked into the culture of America but the culture of your friends. In all honesty the people you hang out with are the ones that influence you the most and that is usually the reason to assimilate. All in all I think you captured that reasoning really well.

  5. Do you see yourself as a conduit to assimilation for your family's farm workers from Mexico?
